About S. Annette

Annette is an orchestral conductor, private music instructor, and professional pianist in western Michigan. She started learning the piano at the age of five. By the time she completed high school, she had learned to play eight additional instruments and had started teaching private piano and flute lessons.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in music history and literature (Wheaton College) and master’s degrees in music theory (Indiana University), vocal performance (Indiana University), and choral conducting (The University of Texas at Austin).

Her students benefit from her diverse experiences and education. She offers a global and historical perspective, making connections across many cultures and time periods. Because of her love of music theory, she enjoys teaching her students how to read music and how to understand the way it is organized. She is comfortable teaching many styles of music, since she has played and/or sung classical, jazz, musical theater, opera, folk, rock/pop, gospel, sacred (multiple faiths), barbershop, and contemporary a cappella music. She encourages ensemble participation, helping her students find people with similar musical goals so they can play and/or sing together.

Annette personalizes each learning experience to fit her students’ needs and desires. She helps them develop musical habits so they can progress in an enjoyable and efficient way. Above all, she makes music lessons lively and fun.
